Message:
Please take the time to pray for Mr. Crosby, the former guitar player from Ratt. Robbin contributed a great deal to the rock music scene over the better part of 20 years. Take some time to think of him and turn up some vintage Ratt music! Speaking for WSJB and Monkey Business, I wish that Robbin does experience a little bit of joy in the days ahead. Whatever the future may bring, we appreciate your music Robbin!
The biography.
WSJB is a non-commercial station out of Standish, Maine. It is on the campus of Saint Joseph's College. The frequency is 91.5 FM and the towns that can hear this station are listed on the home page.
Will Matson joined WSJB in September of 1998 and set out to do a total throwback show to bands from the 80's. It included everything from Poison, Motley Crue and Ratt to Midnight Oil, Escape Club and The Fixx. This show was called "Vader Time" and ran until the end of the 1998 Fall Semester at SJC (Saint Joseph's College). As of right now, Will has been at WSJB longer than anyone else.
Will ran this show every Wednesday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and also on Saturday's from 7:00 PM to 11:45 PM. Sometimes, the dj before Will on Saturday's couldn't make her shifts so he would heroically go on the air at 6:00 PM or even 5:00 PM.
While doing "Vader Time," Will got a lot of requests and good reviews for his unique style. Will thought the show was missing a little something so he recruited the area's resident "metal head" who was very interested in joining the ranks. His name was Frankie Canillas. Will now had a co-host.
Frankie made his first appearance with Will on the first "Vader Time" of December, Wednesday the 2nd. He has been along for the ride ever since.
In January of 1999, "Vader Time" became "Run for cover" and kept the same time slots until the end of the school year in May. More of an emphasis was put on rock and heavy metal from the 80's.
In September of 1999, "Run for cover" changed to "Nothing but a good time" and moved from twice a week to once a week, Saturday nights from 8:00 PM to 12:10 AM.
By now, the transformation from retro and rock/metal was complete, it was now an all-hard rock/metal show. Some of the long-time listeners were disappointed so "Nothing but a good time" had a hard time getting off the ground for awhile but it eventually caught on. The show ran from September until December of 1999.
In January of 2000, "Nothing but a good time" has now become "Monkey Business." The format has been firmly set and the response has been incredible.
The first show was February 5, 2000. The show still runs once a week on Saturday but is now back to the original start time of 7:00 PM and runs until Midnight.
The first season was completed on May 6, 2000. Season #4 started on September 22, 2001. The response has been great again and people are glad to have us back!

Frankie Canillas
Frankie was born in 1980. He is an avid runner and a true metalhead. His sense of humor and free-spiritedness (as well as a fine music collection) is what drew Will to him in the first place.
Frankie is Will's "co-host" on paper but he has done a lot of behind-the-scenes work and contributed a lot of ideas and bands to the show. Frankie lives in Massachusetts and has seen Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Poison (twice), Dokken, Cinderella, Ratt, Great White, Ted Nugent, Kiss, Quiet Riot, Warrant and Joan Jett live.
Frankie does plenty of shows on his own as well.

Frequently asked questions.
We get a lot of questions, hope this helps. I have personally been asked each and every question on here and always reply thruthfully.
Q-DO YOU EVER PLAN ON MOVING ON TO A LARGER STATION?
A-Frankie does plan to go to broadcast school. Will is not going to broadcast school but will look into some radio stations and try to join one right out of college, he does have a good resume.
Q-IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THE RUMOR THAT YOU WERE A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED IN SEASON #3
A-Season #3 of Monkey Business had plenty of good moments but there were also quite a few problems and disappointments. Season #4 is already looking up. We already have a lot of buzz spreading on the show and a lot of new listeners who have discovered us have already contacted us.
Q-WHAT WERE THE DISAPPOINTMENTS IN SEASON #3?
A-Fine, if you got to know. There was some backlash against our show due to our success. Plus, we had two other shows which were totally ripping off what we were doing so the station was being oversaturated with our type of music. Secondly, we had some personal problems outside of the radio station that happened to be brought into the station.
Q-HOW COME YOU PLAYED QUIET RIOT SONGS SUCH AS "WHATEVER IT TAKES" AND "DANGER ZONE" WHEN YOU PLAYED THEM AS THE ARTIST OF THE WEEK AND DIDN'T DO "SLICK BLACK CADILLAC."?
A-When we do an artist, we try to represent every album that they have ever put out, provided we have access to it. "Whatever it takes" came from 'Down to the Bone' which Quiet Riot put out in 1995, an excellent album. I have to represent this album, even if it wasn't overly popular as it is part of the band's history and some of our listeners are familiar with the album. Also, "Danger Zone" was a rare, unreleased track which the band performed at the 1983 US Festival, which I have a copy of. I like to cover the rare unreleased tracks (Danger Zone) or the obscure tracks from obscure albums (Whatever it takes) even if it is at the expense of another hit. But if you did listen, as you seemed to, both of those tracks in question are excellent songs nonetheless and we also played plenty of Quiet Riot's hits as well. I feel we owe it to diehards and casual fans alike to represent everything that Quiet Riot and other bands we play have to offer. I hope this helps.
Q-HOW COME YOU REPEATED WARRANT AND QUIET RIOT AS ARTISTS OF THE WEEK? YOU ALREADY DID THEM BEFORE?
A-It seemed like a good time to do both artists again, it had been awhile since we had chosen them as the Artist of the Week plus we admittedly needed to "fill" a week because occasionally we may not have an artist in mind for a particular week so we repeat an old one, guess you figured out our little secret :)
Q-HOW MANY REQUESTS DO YOU REALLY GET, HOW MANY CALLS AND HOW FAR OF A RANGE DO YOU HAVE?
A-For Monkey Business anyway, we average 20-30 calls a night. Now you may think this is low but it isn't bad for a college station playing "outdated" or "uncool" music on a weekend late at night, especially considering that our signal travels roughly 30 miles. So out of those phone calls, we end up playing between 7 to 15 requests on the average, out of 50 to 60 songs in five hours.
Q-COME ON, DO PEOPLE REALLY LISTEN?
A-As a matter of fact, they do. Our signal travels about 30 miles or so, give or take a bit. We are blessed by the fact that our station is right in the middle of one of the most populated areas of the state. Windham and Portland are our big towns in our range. In addition, the college has upwards of 1000 people right on campus.
Q-DO YOU HAVE ANY LOYAL LISTENERS?
A-We have a number of regular callers every week, particularly from Portland and Windham. I have personally met many people who have said they listen to the show but don't call in either because they don't want the long-distance charges or they think we are doing such a good job with our playlist already. We also gain a few one-time listeners every so often when we choose a certain band for Artist of the Week that they dig or when we interview bands from the area and their fans call in.
Q-HOW CAN MY BAND BE INTERVIEWED ON MONKEY BUSINESS?
A-Sending us an e-mail would be a good start.
Q-WHAT IS THE ARTIST OF THE WEEK?
A-Artist of the Week is something that Frankie thought up for Monkey Business. Frankie had a very very good idea that revolutionized the show in it. Basically, the Artist of the Week consists of one hour of music by a particular band every week on Monkey Business from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM. In the past, we have chosen Warrant, Iron Maiden, Ratt, Poison, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, Motley Crue among many others. We try to play stuff from every era of the bands career and even every album if possible.
Q-DOES WSJB HAVE IT'S OWN STATION WEBSITE?
A-Yes, see the homepage for the link.
Q-HOW COME THIS IS THE ONLY SHOW ON WSJB 91.5 FM THAT HAS A WEBSITE? WHY DON'T YOU LIST OTHER SHOWS ON HERE?
A-Everybody else is too lazy to make an official site for the station or their shows. I (Will Matson) haven't got the time to promote or make sites for other people's shows.
Q-WHY DOES THE NAME OF YOUR SHOW CHANGE? LIKE FROM "VADER TIME" TO "RUN FOR COVER" AND SO ON? IT'S ALWAYS THE SAME SHOW, WHY CHANGE THE NAME?
A-We look at each season as a new beginning. Our loyal listeners know it's the same show and new listeners will think of it as a new show. Besides, each time around we tweak the format and play with some new ideas. But since we have gotten such a great response to "Monkey Business" the name will not be changing again.
Q-WHY IS YOUR SHOW WORTH LISTENING TO? WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO OFFER THAT OTHER SIMILAR SHOWS DON'T?
A-Why is this show good? Let me count the ways.
1. We are on a non-commercial station, so there is a LOT more time for music with no interruptions except for dj talk or station liners. We can get 55 songs spun in a five hour period!
2. Will and Frankie are two guys that ad-lib and don't have writers prepare "envelope-pushing material." We are always off-the-wall but also like to do radio traditionally, the way it was meant to be. We're not Stern and don't pretend to be!
3. We play any good rock request. Call up and name something, we probably have it and we like to be challenged when it comes to good hard rock/metal. In addition to the old hits by your favorite bands from the past, we play the obscure stuff that never gets heard and new songs by old bands.
4. Both of the dj's have unique humor and truly like what they play.
5. There aren't many places in Maine to find this kind of music anymore.
6. You'll never hear a rock mix quite like this!
7. We tell you the real and up-to-date story "Behind the Music." Whether it was the biggest band in the land or a little footnote who no one remembers, we will always let you know what they are up to before or after we spin them.
Q-HOW DID FRANKIE GET ON THE SHOW WITH WILL?
A-Will was looking to retool "Vader Time" and really wanted a co-host. Will had heard of Frankie and then he positioned himself to be in the right place at the right time. They met and Frankie was asked to guest on the show, it went so well that he came on for a permanent position.
Q-CAN I LISTEN TO THE SHOW ONLINE?
A-It's not really up to us. Someday I hope to be able to let you have that capability but the higher-up's have to do their part.
Q-WHY DO YOU ALWAYS PLAY DOUBLE SHOTS OF BANDS? WHY NOT MIX AND MATCH BANDS WITH EACH OTHER?
A-I (Will) am not a mix-master and don't pretend to be. Besides, you don't get much out of a band by just hearing one song on the radio. Plus, if you are only doing one song of a group, it is too hard to pick between playing the new single or an old classic. Instead, I solve any problems by playing both.
